Plants can really bring a kitchen to life, cleaning the air and adding a natural aesthetic in any space. Some plants are more suited to kitchen living than others, however. The following plants will all be happy sitting on your kitchen windowsill or on a shelf beside the recipe books and spices.

Corn plant

Dracaena fragrans, or the corn plant, is the perfect choice to add the finishing touches to a kitchen refurbishment or to give a well-used space a new lease of life. It is easy-to-care-for, doesn’t need to be frequently watered and is ideal for beginners. It has attractive stripy foliage and can grow up to 2m, making it perfect for corner decoration.

Devil’s ivy

Devil’s ivy, also known as golden pothos, can grow successfully in all sorts of light and likes the moist air that is often found in kitchens. It only requires light watering and has trailing stems which can grow to 2m long, making it perfect for higher shelves installed as part of your latest kitchen refurbishment.

Chillies

Chilli plants love a sunny kitchen windowsill. Buy little plants at the start of summer or sow seeds around February and start to grow your own kitchen ingredients. You’ll be able to pick chillies between July and October, and in between, you can enjoy the decoration of this colourful plant.

Herbs

Herbs are one of the easiest, most versatile, and useful things you can grow in your kitchen. Do a little research and find the perfect herb for you. For example, if you have a nice warm spot in your kitchen, coriander and basil should be easy to grow.

Swiss cheese plant

The Monstera adansonii, or mini Swiss cheese plant, is a popular choice for all sorts of spaces, including kitchens. The leaves can be trained to grow in the direction you want, and it doesn’t take too much effort to keep this plant healthy. It is a South American rainforest native, so it should thrive in a humid and warm kitchen.
