Whenever you drive there is risk, and like all machine’s cars can go wrong at times and then you might break down. If this is the case, knowing what you should do in the event of a breakdown is important, and depending on where you are it will differ.
You should always make sure that you have cover in case of a breakdown, such as the AA or the RAC – you will know that a breakdown vehicle is arriving because it will have chapter 8 chevron kits marking it.
If you break down on a busy road, or a motorway then you need to get onto the hard shoulder as safely as you can if that is possible – if on a smart motorway, which doesn’t have a hard shoulder, then you need to get onto an emergency refuge area or go into the lane the furthest to the left.
If you are driving on a smaller quieter road, such as going around country lanes, get as close to the left hand side as you can and put your hazard lights on so that other cars can see you are there and have broken down.
In any of these situations, if you are concerned about your safety when you are there, you should call 999 before you call for a breakdown company to come and assist you. Remember that the most important thing is safety and that you should always ensure that both you and other road users are as safe as possible when you have broken down.
