Winter is on its way now, as you have probably noticed – the chilly mornings and the darker evenings also bring with them the wintery weather, and this is something that can cause a lot of damage to our homes.

The roof is one of the most important parts of the home and protects us from the elements, especially at this time of the year. But with winter just around the corner, here are a few things to look out for during the winter to keep your roof in good repair…

Strong Winds – Over the winter there are often strong winds, some years there may be more than others, but it is something that we have all come to expect over the winter. As well as blowing tiles off the roof, they can also blow down neighbouring trees which may land on your roof, so it is good to bear this in mind if you have trees nearby.

Icicles – When the temperatures drop, this can cause ice and snow to accumulate on the roof. Once it starts to melt it can run down and freeze, causing icicles. Not only are these dangerous if they fall but they also can pull parts of the roof or gutter down with them if they are heavy enough.

Flooding – Floods are an all too familiar winter event and a lot of rain can be damaging to a roof, particularly if it is a flat roof. Keep an eye out for pooling water as you will need to call in a professional, like these roofers Hereford based R Richards and sons roofers in Hereford to repair this problem as it will only get worse if left.
